Zookoda, the company who operate the free rss to email service which powers my newsletter, delivering it weekly to subscribers’ inboxes, has announced that they will no longer be able to run that service from 1st January, 2009. Unfortunately my newsletter will no longer be delivered every Saturday until I can find another service operator. I hope to be able to find one soon and transfer the current subscribers to the new service once it is up and running to reduce the amount of inconvenience to my readers.

Due to popular request, I have recorded the latest ABRSM Grade 2 Piano Pieces from the 2009-2010 syllabus and uploaded them to my gallery, whence they are listenable though not downloadable. Either browse the album or put the name of the piece you want to hear into the search facility.

If you wish to purchase mp3s of these pieces, they are available from the ABRSM download shop.

Frequently Asked Questions - William Hay Piano Tuition - Studio Policy

How much do lessons cost?

The current lesson fee is £27/hour for lessons at school or in a pupil’s home within 5 miles of Chester. Most students have 30 minute lessons at £13.50 each, though other lengths may be available depending upon the individual and their situation. For lessons at William Hay’s Home Studio the current rate is £22/hour.

How many lessons will I need?

For most students, piano tuition is ongoing. The initial lesson is a consultation where we can get to know one another and decide together what your individual learning needs are and what you hope to achieve from taking lessons. The initial consultation lesson is chargeable at the standard rate but there is no commitment at this point to come back for further lessons.

How can I pay for my lessons?

If you decide to continue, then you need to book a series of lessons one calendar month at a time. At the beginning of the month you will be invoiced for that month and payment is due within fourteen days. For those having lessons in school, the billing cycle is half-termly. Payments can be made by cash or cheque payable to William Hay. Payments can also be made via direct bank transfer or paypal by prior arrangement.

What music will I need?

As lessons are tailored to the individual learner then the music you need really depends upon you. If you have had lessons before then bring any music you have with you and be prepared to demonstrate your current ability. Any music requirements will be suggested at the initial consultation and you can either purchase it direct from William Hay or use your local sheet music supplier.

I have a keyboard at home, is this OK to practise on?

It is recommended that, as a bare minimum, the instrument on which you will practise has 61 touch sensitive keys. Ideally though, you should have the full compliment of 88 fully weighted hammer action keys available on your piano.

How often do I need to practise?

Every day is the best answer; however we all lead busy lives so it’s up to you to do as much as you can to make your lessons worth while. You only get out of it what you put in.

What if I am ill one day or I have something else on, can I rearrange or cancel my lesson?

If you give notice of 24 hours or more before your appointment then it may be possible to rearrange lessons or if the lesson has to be cancelled then no charge is due for that lesson.
If you give less than 24 hours notice then half the lesson fee is due. If no notice is given and you do not turn up to your lesson at the appointed time then you will be charged the whole lesson fee.

The next concert in the Ludus Cantiones Student Concert Series will take place at lunchtime (12:30) on Saturday 22nd November, 2008. All Saint’s Church, Hoole is the venue for the termly concert which offers seating for over 300 people and a nice grand piano on which to perform. All students and friends and family are invited to attend the concert which will last no more than an hour.

This will be the third piano concert this year at All Saint’s and you can listen online to previous concerts on the web gallery

A retiring collection will be made with a suggested donation of £1 per audience member for the benefit of the church.
